Visiting an osteopath:

When you visit an osteopath for the first time a full case history will be taken and you will be given an examination. You will normally be asked to remove some of your clothing and to perform a simple series of movements.

The osteopath will then use a highly developed sense of touch, called palpation, to identify any points of weakness or excessive strain throughout the body. The osteopath may need additional ivestigations such as x-rays or blood tests

This will allow a full diagnosis and suitable treatment plan to be developed with you. Osteopathy is patient centred, which means the treatment is geared to you as an individual.

Osteopathy

In the 19th century an American physician Dr. Andrew Taylor Still became disillusioned with contemporary medicine. As an alternative he felt that many diseases resulted from mechanical imbalance within the body and developed ways to correct these.

Osteopathy was first introduced to Britain in 1898, and in 1917 the first Osteopathic school was established in London.

The Osteopaths Act 1993 was to establish a modernised system of self-regulation similar to those of other key health professions.

Since 8th May 2000 all practising osteopaths have to be registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). The public and medical professions can now be confident that all osteopaths have been revalidated and hence be assured of their safety and competence.

All osteopaths need to have medical malpractice insurance and to follow a strict code of conduct.

Patients have the same safeguards as when they currently consult a doctor or dentist.

What about treatment:

Osteopaths use their hands both to investigate the underlying causes of pain and to carry out manipulative techniques. Gentle releasing techniques are often used, as well as rhythmic joint movements

What do osteopaths treat?

Most back pains result from mechanical disturbances of the spine - postural strains, joint derangements and spinal disc injuries.

Many problems relate to work:

Work, whether at a computer terminal or in heavy industry, can give rise to disorders of muscles, tendons and joints, particularly in the back, hands, and arms. Osteopaths treat many conditions related to the workplace and can give remedial advice and preventative exercise.

What does it cost?

Alan charges £30 per half hour. Many private health insurance schemes give benefit for osteopathic treatment. Some companies will reimburse the total fee that you have paid to the osteopath, some only a percentage. Most companies require a GP or specialist referral. All insurance companies have help lines to explain your actual benefits and methods of claiming.
